in the ‘90s, a new generation of vibrant, software generated soundscapes emerged. Communal access to the internet propagated the new hive mind of ideas online, giving way to smoother, stress-free textures. The PC revolution opened the gateway to ray-traced playgrounds of color and light, allowing for visions of utopic proportions to manifest themselves on screensavers far and wide.

Research from the University of Kent has led to the development of the MeshCODE theory, a revolutionary new theory for understanding brain and memory function. This discovery may be the beginning of a new understanding of brain function and in treating brain diseases such as Alzheimer's.

In a paper published by Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience, Dr. Ben Goult from Kent's School of Biosciences describes how his new theory views the brain as an organic supercomputer running a complex binary code with neuronal cells working as a mechanical computer. He explains how a vast network of information-storing memory molecules operating as switches is built into each and every synapse of the brain, representing a complex binary code. This identifies a physical location for data storage in the brain and suggests memories are written in the shape of molecules in the synaptic scaffolds.

The theory is based on the discovery of protein molecules, known as talin, containing 'switch-like' domains that change shape in response to pressures in mechanical force by the cell. These switches have two stable states, 0 and 1, and this pattern of binary information stored in each molecule is dependent on previous input, similar to the Save History function in a computer. The information stored in this binary format can be updated by small changes in force generated by the cell's cytoskeleton.

In the brain, electrochemical signaling between trillions of neurons occurs between synapses, each of which contains a scaffold of the talin molecules. Once assumed to be structural, this research suggests that the meshwork of talin proteins actually represent an array of binary switches with the potential to store information and encode memory.

This mechanical coding would run continuously in every neuron and extend into all cells, ultimately amounting to a machine code coordinating the entire organism. From birth, the life experiences and environmental conditions of an animal could be written into this code, creating a constantly updated, mathematical representation of its unique life.

Dr. Goult, a reader in biochemistry, said: "This research shows that in many ways the brain resembles the early mechanical computers of Charles Babbage and his Analytical Engine. Here, the cytoskeleton serves as the levers and gears that coordinate the computation in the cell in response to chemical and electrical signaling. Like those early computation models, this discovery may be the beginning of a new understanding of brain function and in treating brain diseases."

Léuli Eshrāghi’s performance installation „tagata a nuʻu poʻo tagata a faguʻu“ is a contemporary faʻamalama, an “offering to ancestors, spirits and guardian spirits”. The alofisā (ceremonial circle) made of coconut water bottles echoes the form of customary architecture in the Sāmoan islands. Commercially available coconut water tetra-packs actively consider vā (spatial, multidirectional relationships) with human and beyond-human kin. Each of the 200 coconut water tetra-packs represents a year of cumulative Gregorian shame-time imposed on all kinds of bodies, sexualities, and kinships since 1830, when John Williams brought the “civilising mission” to the artist’s ancestral archipelago.

During the performance on the opening night, the golden sheen referenced the healing properties of electrolyte-rich coconut water, that effectively hide the nefarious effects of monocrop plantations across the global south, in a system of abstraction of responsibility that the artist terms hydrodecadence. Léuli Eshrāghi endeavours to move beyond intersecting forms of domination towards body, land, mind and water, to ecocritical states of softness, plurality, and pleasure.

sourceSAVVY-IG:The forms, shapes, colors, textures, symbolisms, and contexts in Al Hassan Issah’s installation „The Wind’s Eyes“ that are employed in the “forging” and fabricating of the works are all imported from everyday objects: made up of gates, and balustrades which usually represent separations, difference, class, or power within urban centers. The references range from domestic wall paintings in compound houses within the “zongo” community where the artist grew up in Ghana, to canons that emerged from Africa’s encounter with Islam, the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, and the traces of colonialism and modernism in shared public spaces. The gold wall and lacquer on the gates echo the regular use of gold ornaments and decorations in Kumasi.

Looking through the signs and signifiers of these windows and gates pregnant with history, across layers of time, the work highlights systemic hierarchies and social stratifications as well as potentials for social repair. Al Hassan Issah’s transformed symbols of thresholds, perspectives, and marks of an in-between tension, are wrapped in various sounds collected through the period and process of their production – such as welding, grinding, cutting, hammering, and even transporting. As this work collapses material space and linear time, we are invited to look through and towards an alternative collectivity.

How do we recompose a common in a society marked by separations? The project 4 +3 =1 seeks to enact common denominators that tell (hi)stories in order to engage with the possibilities of repairing and restoring societal balance(s).

Since time immemorial, Western ideologies have generated and narrated commons: those points when circles intersect into commonplaces. Yet, these commonhoods have been produced by systems of limitations, dualities, and exclusion, lacking relationality and equilibrium between humans, as well as humans and nature. Alternative commons have long existed, African philosophies extend plural ecosystems of connection: As underlined by Marimba Ani, in Ancient Bantu philosophy “nature” was and still is understood as “ntu”, the “rhythm”, the “universal life force” that humans are a part of.

Considering their inclusive ground, within this research and exhibition project, we seek knowledge from ancient non-Western philosophies and narratives, to better understand and enact the common denominators that can regulate our societies today. One of these trajectories we look into are the ancient Egyptian traditions of composing “beings” based on nature’s forces: in it, feminine forces are symbolised by the number 4. It carries the masculine, and the society in general. Masculine forces are symbolised by the lower number 3. The equation hence becomes: Four + Three = Community. FOURPLUSTHREEEQUALSONE.

Fundamentally, the project asks, “How can we integrate the performative multiplicities that the feminine, masculine, fluid, or non-conforming hold into our shared realities? In the core, it is about understanding that they can mutually carry and influence one another – within the subjective embodiments of their experiences, and their manifold existences in societies. How can ancestral philosophies in their embraces of coalescing and varied forces teach us ways of recalibrating community nourishment?”

As M. NourbeSe Philip writes, history is underscored by memory and tethered to etymologies of deliberation, grief, recollection, documentation, and martyrous sacrifice. As narrations and stories are recalled, told, retold, dormant, forgotten, and revived, they are simultaneously vested with life, death, and circulations of spirit. We trail the potency of ancient mythologies and their cosmogonies that ask us to remember and preserve ancient archives. We step with the ancestral into elliptical and transversal presence, near to stories seeking equilibrium. Together, passing into futures through limbic wings of intersecting time.

Visiting 4 +3 = 1, we arrive with an ancestral invocation, leading us from the skies and exterior of SAVVY Contemporary into the exhibition with its plural conceptions of time-space, where Eli Wewentxu and Sharon Mercado Nogales, together the Berlin-based duo Moviendo Territorios, act as migrant artists of Abya Yala/Latin America within diasporas in Germany. The clouds meet with our joined grounds as two symbols made of charcoal, soil, salt, and water cross points on the cement at our feet – carrying us into the cosmovisions of the Mapuche and Andean. A trio of videos shows interviews with indigenous elders alongside dance-activations, where acts of reciprocity with the body and for the earth coalesce.

Archive Books shares an archival inventory as activations of their library in relation to cosmologies beyond the West and a cross-pollination with a forthcoming exhibition in their space in Milan, entitled Spiritual Fabulations, on witchery practices and their multiplicities.

Lito Kattou greets us with hybrid interspecies beings beaming as shadows; with heads of trees and arms of insects they stand as warnings rising from the terrains: the fluid, mythical creatures speak of the repercussions of climate change and ask us to confront the ways the absences of honor towards relational cosmologies of care have brought us to points of earthly devastation.

From the windows and onto the carpet, moving through the space with green and purple light sourcing relations to ultraviolet zones, Viron Erol Vert emanates ruptures of many fragments, filling a carpet with family portraits of his parents, their images refusing to fit into the given frames. We are forced to question the sacred and the presumably profane as we meet perspectives cracking from conventions of group identity and self to enable our most potent and resonant expressions of integrity.

Al Hassan Issah translates and echoes public space from within, teleporting us from Germany to the ornamental and emblematic historicity of Ghana, in the forms of textures, sound, and materials representing separations of class or power within its urban centers and potential for re-equilibriums of social restoration.

We then move to realms of inner architectures of the seen and unseen, where Rie Nagai’s process of “kuuki wo yomu,” which in Japanese loosely conveys “reading the air”, connects to her ongoing research on places where people come together beyond the rules of the mundane. In her research on nightclubs in Berlin, she foregrounds the emotional charge to traverse the energetic remnants of collective spaces, transmitting their spirited expressions.

SAVVY.doc and the Arjun Appadurai Library present books traveling with cosmological multiplicities; ancestral commons, regulations, and shapeshifting ancients which stand at the focal core of their shelves with stories and tracings across transdisciplinary thought.

Zohra Opoku’s three canvases stitched with sutures are part of her series The Myths of Eternal Life, where in the wake of her cancer diagnosis she wove stories of devastation and rejuvenation from The Egyptian Book of the Dead. The texts sprawled atop linen dyed with indigo are communicating with ancient learnings on healing and protection for reclamations of power.

Mithu Sen’s video installation, I have only one language, it is not mine, exists in its own time-space, in a no-place of fantastical dimensions. The film follows Mago, a seemingly homeless person who speaks her own language, playing, sharing, and building intimacy with young orphaned girls in Kerala. Despite strugglesome realities, warming relations unfurl outside the narrow alleys of comprehension by means of the knowledge of the body.

Nearby, tagata a nuʻu poʻo tagata a faguʻu, Léuli Eshrāghi’s work which translates as “people of the villages/land or people of the bottled oil”, creates an alofisā (ceremonial circle) dedicated to Sāmoan ancestors that is founded on vā (spatial, multidirectional relationships with all kin) to call for ecological and genealogical repair.

We listen to the voices of plants with Qianxun Chen, as their biodata is transmitted through modulations. We channel into a relation towards environments as speaking beings, where their engagements are slow and subtle. The organic rhythmic cycles they emit rise into focus and share resonance with the ancient Chinese text 庄子齐物论, The Adjustment of Controversies, where agency exists across all life forms.

Diana Ejaita’s bronze sculptures ascend from the floors in a shared constellation speaking to a wall filled with multicolored and symbiotic shadow-beings where the wound becomes the passage transporting us to a magic-based, spiritual world encompassed by West African myths: where in-between spaces bustle with ancestors existing along planes of light and darkness, each sharing lessons on possibilities of living a full life.

The staircase of SAVVY descends us into territories of the subconscious and transmutational. In the basement, Azin Feizabadi’s triptych film Uchronia extends a shape-shifting tale of the ancient Persian love story, Layla and Majnun. The characters serve as a non-static vessel of the ancient tale underpinned by the yearning for corporeal proximity, societal sense-making, and love; a trans boy, older lovers, and children are the protagonists each echoing the film’s mantra, "We carry the past together”.

Neighboring is Castiel Vitorino Brasileiro's Quarto de Cura, the first of her five site-specific temples to occur outside of her birthplace Brasil. The circular structure is entered from behind, where Bantu ontologies and modes of transmutation are traced; moments of safety, liberation, recalibration, devotion, and other mysteries embedded with astronomy, black life, and solidarity speak forth.

A synthesized mix by Elizabeth Glauser blends sessions of the 4+3=1 RADIO BOOKS, emitting a manifold soundscape across practitioners and artists, who have joined in a chorus of research and knowledge emissions over the course of the last months through SAVVYZΛΛR with conversations across cosmologies streaming across sonic ethers.

Bilge Emir’s tapestries for the 4+3=1 RADIOBOOKS bring their digital designs to life in the physical, unfolding at different heights throughout the space.

After a crush at the Brussels World Fair in 1900, King Leopold II decided, for his own personal pleasure, to have the Japanese Tower and Japanese Gardens built. In order to create this little relocated Asian paradise, he had the wood, sculptures, paintings, ornaments, trees, workers, and their know-how imported. For a few years, he invited his entourage to enjoy it during large banquets and private receptions. He then had the idea of transforming the Japanese Tower into a luxury restaurant, but he died. This magnificent place remains closed to the public except during an annual opening.

"A Story of a Global Disease" is a short tale about artificial paradises of globalization, a melancholic walk through the exotic relics of free trade, where whim, appropriation, and appearances take precedence over otherness. Here, geishas eat chips, Europeans confuse Tokyo and Beijing, and tribal ceremonies begin with samples and drumkits.

These tracks have been initially recorded for the “ON THE GO” Beursschouwburg’s project in Oct. 2020. It has been originally and properly released on shiny pinky tape by the fantastic Bamboo Shows imprint and includes an unreleased track (Walk With Your Romance).

Following a B.F.E proposal to release on a limited vinyl edition, Teenage Menopause from France & Moli Del Tro from Brussels joined the project. Rude66 remastered these gems and Harrisson made the artwork.

From trickster tales and skinwalking legends to transubstantiation and reincarnation, into more secular realms of genetic sciences, plastic surgery and AI research, the idea of finding the being further than our own human nature—the Alien Self—has occupied our minds long before we imagined planets outside our own.

By @dj_dr.socrates • From the Zongo settlements in West Africa the gates of Al Hassan Issah @ssanisa1 with their characteristic ornamental gold and lacquer are silent witness of thresholds that disjoin the public and the private, separate social classes and signal power. Never fully closed, the gates are dialecticians, they let the joy pass through, open communities and allow sight to drill like the wind.

But these gates echo the infamous Doors of No Return too… the point of departure of millions of enslaved Africans.

All had forts there… the Portuguese, the French, the British, the Dutch… committing crimes against humanity, never repaired, never forgiven. The Africans who today drown in the waters of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean are never coming back. Those who are expelled at the gates of Europe come back in shame.

The doors of Europe are closed for Africa. But Al Hassan Issah’s gates are never fully closed, they let us to see through, to envision the meaning of international solidarity.

The research, exhibition, performance and discursive project UNRAVELING THE (UNDER-) DEVELOPMENT COMPLEX takes its cue from, and celebrates Walter Rodney’s How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, while asking the question: How can we imagine a Post-(Under)development world? This project is a daring effort to analyse the status quo and imagine a world that does not exist in the binary of “development” and “underdevelopment” and explore the possible shifts from structures of ‘’hierarchical dependence’’ towards those of ‘’balanced interdependence’’. Following a theoretical research phase, the exhibition traversed across performative modalities through various artistic practices that poetically engage in a transtemporal dialogue making visible the complex entanglements and contradictions embedded in these systems by highlighting the ruptures that simultaneously serve as generative spaces for new imaginaries to emerge.

Proceeding forward in this journey with the INVOCATIONS program, the aim is to expand upon the learnings from the exhibition, challenging and addressing historical, economic, infrastructural and global frameworks that reinforce these systems of oppressive dependency. These two days will be accompanied by activists, sonic agitators, scholars, ecofeminists, poets, political economists, policy advocates and practitioners who will engage in discursive formats to delve deeper into the resistance and perseverance that allows imaginaries to exist and emerge across geographies, while celebrating Walter Rodney’s legacy. The INVOCATIONS program is an attempt to share knowledge across languages, and through performance and sonority to imagine and shape together a post developmental age towards transformative conviviality.

The installation comprises a substantial pyramid-like structure constructed from 57 abstract, headless bodies, delicately balanced atop one another. These headless forms interlock like puzzle pieces, revealing bones that appear to meld into each other's frames, culminating in a single, grand skeletal sculpture: the main body. This static presentation unfolds upon a black square, serving as the stage for this ritualistic-like assemblage, whose precise purpose remains ambiguous. Five artworks, evoking the visual language of Hieronymus Bosch, stand sentinel around the installation. Bosch, the twisted pyramid, the enigmatic black square – all symbolically encapsulate a novel fusion that materializes as something recognizable yet alien, both ancestrally ancient and forward-looking.

« Lors de sa première exposition personnelle « Bonjour le Bonheur » à la galerie Henri Chartier, en 2021, Floris Dutoit explorait la gravité de la surface picturale : l’acrylique diluée à l’extrême dégoulinait, formant des grumeaux, distordant des figures caricaturales. Cette seconde exposition privilégie des lignes franches, des surfaces poreuses, lisses et bombées, des figures lisibles et assagies, se détachant crûment de leur fond de toile de lin (et de coton). Le textile brut offre la teinte dominante de l’exposition, un liant entre la série de cochons en salopette, celle des chaises de jardin, ainsi qu’un milieu concret, immaculé et statique.

'NG', 'Nice Gangsta', is an appellation that refers to a new generation of business men/women and artists.
NG, signifying "Nice Gangsta" or "New Gangsta" is a new word that appeared on the social platforms and relatively samely in the american and european society from the impulsion of the Hip-Hop and entrepreneurship community in USA in the end of the years 2010 and the begin 2020s, describing successfull mostly minorities sourced individuals getting their way in the world of Business, Sport, Art, Fashion and Industry. Apparently nuancing with the term "OG" formerly refering to an artistical/phisolophical branch of the Hip-Hop culture incorporated in the gangsta rap dogma that means "Original Gangsta" and refers more broadly to the American gang's culture that have been taught to the world by tremendous artists like Snoop Dog, Kool G Rap, the Kingpin King, 36 Mafia, Gangsta Boo; and influencers who are a new business-model positioning between best paid sports-men/women and CEO profiles.

Presumely the term "NG" would rather be associated to "OG" regarding the parenting historiography. The word "OG" is deeply sourced by the american gangster's mythology and imagery and is incarnated by personnalities such as Al Capone, Malcolm X or Tupac Shakur. Whereas "NG" seems to refer more to make good actions for communities and get economical success by achieving legal and clean businesses or excelling into popular culture or sports and getting clean money out of it, the "NG" culture seems to share the same philanthropic and community caregiving values that the main godfather culture does, as philanthropically and caritative values figures are samely. The NG is suspected to be largely sourced into Patriachy and Catholicist themes coming from the old continent.

The NG individual can have the same social/behavorial troubles that the most marginalized populations have like drug issues or familial/violence issues but will devote his economical benefits value's to his family and the most fragile communities instantly if he could. The concept of NG is relatively connected to new technologies, automatism, high level management and is aimed to rely on the term "hood rich" samely as brought by Sexyy Red that defines the ghetto man or woman who becomes rich evolving in the industry samely as a white socially priviligiated "out-of-harvard" business "stay-in-Law" student perfect exemple would accomplish. The attributes of the "NGs" is a strange intrication of both altruism or philanthropic christian-infused values like sharing , preventing, protecting, listening, parenting; with a high technical/management high-profile silicon valley style temperance and agenda in the same time.

NGs seems allegedly to prefer the neighboorhood and locals actions when they are not working and are really linked to their childhood community, location, generation and culture. They pay attention to the youth, social care, education and health in the neglected urban stripes where they're from. They rarely allie with local gangs or conspirations, and most often refuses these types of subordinations.

By the way many NGs are actual gangsta rappers or "OG" children, they are mostly claimed in all the national territory thanks to their international success and so-on validated by local conspiracies who are flattered to see these successful people echo-ing the OG culture and minorities differently.

The actual NGs are clearly aware of successfull business men and their culture, as well of the mondialisation and communication era biases and technics. They are not affraid of the big industry and feel confortable with it. They are often emerging in the asian manufactured world more intelligently and more positively compared to the generation of their parents with the use of social platforms for exemple which offers interactivity and better communication bias/rate rather than elders's TV, radio set, and phone calls would do.

It is hard to say to this day if NGs really have a moral chart, or code. But they seem to avoid violence and agressivity mostly. It is hard to say if they are clearly identifying themselves as members of a same group.

Most important known NGs are Sexyy Red, Rob49, Glorilla, Lebron James.
